Part I – The Three Trials.

If I could start this walkthrough with a little bit of a review, it would be simply that The Curse of Monkey Island TM is one of the greatest point and click adventure games of all time! Now it has been re-released as a special edition with voice actors from the newer games, as well as improved graphical animation to introduce this classic point and click adventure game to a whole new generation

The game begins with a little preamble none of which is supposed to make any sense to you yet!

walk down the mountain side after you’ve spoken with the lookout guy, then head to the right until you come to The Scumm Bar (TM). Enter. You don’t have to talk to anyone here, but if you are new to Monkey Island it will help build background. You could probably start by talking to ‘Mancomb Seepgood’, or the dog.

Walkthrough to the right past the curtain and you will find the three important-looking pirates. Talk to the pirates, tell them you want to be a mighty pirate, they will mention “the tree trials” – mastery of the sword, thievery and treasure – er – huntery. Wait until you see the cook walkthrough to the left of the curtain and sneak into the kitchen on the right. Pick up the hunk of meat from the table, the pot from underneath, use the meat in the cooking pot (on the stove), then pick it up again (it’s now stewed meat). Open the door on the right and walkthrough to the far right. Guybrush kicks the plank, disturbing the seagull. Keep doing this until you can pick the red herring. Leave the Scumm Bar (TM) cutscene

When the cutscene has finished, exit back the way you came towards the lookout point and walkthrough to the top right until you come to the map of Mêlée Island TM. Hover over the blip just to the North East of where you are, marked “clearing’. Enter the circus tent you find, talk to the Fettucini brothers. They will ask if you want to try a death defying feat being fired out of their cannon. Agree to give it a try, and when they ask for your helmet, show them the pot. You will be fired out of the cannon, and when you say something the Fettucini brothers they will breathe a sigh of relief, and give you 478 pieces of eight! woohoo!

Leave the tent and walkthrough onto the map, then walk back to the lookout point, past the Scumm Bar (TM) and through into town. Speak to the citizen of Mêlée and tell him your name is Sven, he will give you a map to the legendary lost treasure of Mêlée Island (or is it?) for 100 pieces of eight. Buy it from him. Speak to the three pirates further on the left, hover your mouse over the rat until it runs away and talk to them. Keep going until they give you the minutes (and two pieces of eight!).

Next, go through the first door on the right, pickup the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle from on top of the trunk. Walkthrough the shop to the right talk with the voodoo lady. She will tell your fortune, talk to her about everything, leave her house and continue through the archway.

You will hear someone saying “Psssst” from the alley. Walk into the alley. Here you will meet the law of the land, Fester Shinetop. . Talk to him and leave the alley when you are done. Enter the right door. It leads into the shop. When you enter the shopkeeper will start talking to you, if he’s not there ring the bell and he will come toddling along. Go up the stairs and pick up the shovel next to the safe. Go down again and pick up the sword on -top of the red chest. Go talk to the shopkeeper and tell him you wish to buy the shovel and the sword. Don’t ask him who you can test the sword on yet, that will come later.

Leave the shop and walkthrough up to the top of the cliff and onto the map. Go to the place named “house”, it’s the area furthest to the right. You will be stopped at a bridge, where a troll blocks your path. Talk with him and then give him the red herring. He will then let you pass. (Notice that it’s George Lucas in a costume when he’s eating it!) Click the area called “house” again. When you get there you will see a house with a sign outside it. It is Captain Smirks house and he takes 30 pieces of eight for a sword fighting lesson. Knock on the door and Captain Smirk will greet you. Talk with him and get him to train you. During this conversation you’ll also hear about Carla, the Sword Master. When he agrees to train Guybrush they go into his house. You’ll see a cutscene of Guybrush getting trained. (You have to choose a few lines of speech during the cutscene.) Now you’re trained in sword fighting!

Now you have to learn some insults so you can beat Carla, the Sword Master, and complete one of the three trials. Go back onto the map you will now see a lot of other white dots running around on the map. These are other pirates and you have to fight them to learn the sword fighting insults and witty comebacks. Say the line prepare to die. The sword fight will begin. The pirate will use an insult and you have to respond with the appropriate comback. You probably won’t win the first few times, but you will gradually learn some insults and comebacks. Keep doing this with other pirate also until one of them says “Wow! YouÙ¾fre good enough to fight the Sword Master.” Now you are ready to fight the Sword Master! To find her, go back to the shop and talk to the storekeeper. Say, “I’m looking for the Sword Master of Mêlée Island TM”. The storekeeperagrees to hike all the way over to the Sword Masterand ask her if he can show you her hideout.

As soon as he has left the shop, follow him! Open the door and go outside. You’ll see him walking away, follow him. When you get to the map, the storekeeper is the only blip on the map, follow him into the fork. Once inside the fork, keep following him and you’ll soon find the Sword Master. After the storekeeper has left, approach her and talk to her. Soon you’ll be in a fight with her. Now you have to fight her like you fought the pirates, but she uses other insults so you have to find a comeback that matches it. When you win she’ll give you a T-shirt to prove this.

Walkthrough into the forest and choose one of the paths, it doesn’t matter which one you choose. You’ll end up near some yellow flowers, pick them (Guybrush notes how this is not very pirate like). Now you need to find the buried treasure, to do this you need to look at the map you bought from the citizen of Mêlée. First go back to the first part of the forest and look at the map, if it says “Back! Two-Three-Four!! Just ignore the “Two-Three-Four!” simply follow the first word. Left being left and right, right but back is away from screen. Now, simply follow the map and you’ll soon be at a part of the forest that looks a little bit different than the rest. Walkthrough to the right of the screen, woohoo! There’s the X! Use the shovel on the X You’ll see a cutscene of Guybrush digging and finding another T-shirt to prove he has found the legendary lost treasure of Mêlée Island TM.

Walkthrough to the town and past the shop to the governor’s mansion. You now have to steal the Idol of Many Hands. There are guard dogs blocking you, use the yellow petal with the stewed meat and hey presto you’ve got meat with condiment. Give it to the guard dogs and they’ll fall asleep. Open the front door and go inside Governor Marley’s mansion. Open the door next to the vase and go in, Fester Shinetop will appear. He tries to arrest you and there’s a big fight scene. You escape and Fester Shinetop is trapped. As you realized during the fight, you need a file to open the lock to the Idol of Many Hands.

Leave the mansion and walkthrough to the jail. Inside is a prisoner called Otis. Talk to him and you’ll learn that Guybrush wont talk to him because he has very bad breath! Go buy some breath mints in the store and give them to Otis. Talk to him about everything. Give him the gopher repellent. He’ll then give you a carrot cake. Open the carrot cake, you’ll find a file inside it. Walkthrough to the mansion and crawl through the hole in the wall that Guybrush made during the fight). Another cutscene…

When asked for an explanation, choose any option. Now you’ll meet the gorgeous governor Marley and she saves your rugged behind. After you flirt with governor Marley, walktthrough the front door outside again. Cutscene…

Now you need to get up. Pick up the idol. Guybrush will pick up a sword and climb up. When you get up you’ll see a ghost ship sailing away, cutscene…

Now you need to get a ship and gather a crew of three people, but first walkthrough to the Scumm Bar and you will find the cook crying at the table where the three important-looking-pirates were. Talk to him about everything. When you are leaving, pick up all the mugs you can find. (There are five of them, grab them all). Walkthrough to the world map towards the group of lights there called lights. Here you will be greeted by the ultimate comedy video game character Stan. He’ll show you some ships, ask about the one that’s half submerged. Get him to show you a ship and then say, “Actually, I was hoping to get one on credit”. He’ll say he doesn’t give credit, but that if you had a job the storekeeper might.

Leave Stan’s Previously Owned Vessels and walkthrough talk to the storekeeper, Stan gave you a compass when you left. Tell the storekeeper you need some credit, then lie and say you do have a job. He’ll go get a note from the safe, write down the combination he uses. He’ll then ask you what your job is, you’ll have to fess up and say you don’t have a job. The storekeeper will put the note back in the safe, this gives you another chance to see the combination. When he gets back, tell him you are looking for the Sword Master again, as before he’ll hike all the way over to her again and you are left all alone in the store. Go up and repeat the combination. (Push or pull the lever). Get the note out, now you have a note of 5000 pieces of eight! Woohoo crime does pay!

Walkthrough to Stan and tell him you haven’t got much to spend. He’ll show you the ship we want. Then tell him you’ve got a note from the storekeeper. Stan tells you he wants 10000 pieces of eight for it, but you only have 5000, so you need to barter. Ask him about extras and say, “I think I can live without that particular piece of junk” to everything he says. Do that for a while and then say “Enough about extras, already” and ask him what he thinks it’s worth. If the price is 7300, tell him you didn’t want the ship anyway. He calls you back and says he now think it’s worth 6300 pieces of eight. Make him the offer of 5000 pieces of eight. He’ll take it and you’ve got a ship, YAY!

Now you need to get 3 crew members, first we will go get the Sword Master, walkthrough to her hideout again. click on the blip named Sword Master on the map. Talk to her and tell her that the governor has been kidnapped. She will join your crew. Walkthrough to the map, cutscenec

On the island map click the blip to the North East called Island. When you get there you’ll see Hook Island. To get over there; use the rubber chicken with the cable Wheee! Open the door to the house and go in. Now you will meet Meathook. (Ask him about his tattoo! For the lulz!)Tell him the governor has been kidnapped, and that you are gathering a crew to go after her. He’ll agree to you being the captain on one condition, that you prove your courage by touching the winged devil! Open the small door and see a parrot! Just touch and Meathook is a member of your crew.

Walkthrough to the prison and talk to Otis and tell him that the governor has been kidnapped. Ask him if he will join your crew if you let him out. He agrees so now walkthrough to the Scumm Bar kitchen. Fill one of the mugs with grog from the barrel. The grog dissolves through the mug very fast; so on your way back to the prison poor it into the other mugs before it dissolves through all of them one at a time. When you reach the prison, use the grog on the lock of Otis’ cell. Now walkthrough to the dock, beside the Scumm Bar. There you’ll meet Stan and the other crew members. They will ask some questions, answer them and you’ll be on your way, cutscenec

Part II – The journey

After the cutscene, where you discover that your crew is rather lazy, you start of fin the captain’s cabin. Open the drawer, look inside it and Guybrush will pick up an old book. It is the captain’s log. If you read it, this is a story all about how a Captain and a Mr. Toothrot mysteriously ended up on Monkey Island TM and you’ll discover that they used the top of a box of breakfast cereal as a bookmark. Pick up the feathered quill and the ink well from the desk. Leave the room and climb up the rope ladder by the mast, when you are at the top of it pick up the Jolly Roger from the crow’s nest, clamber back down to the deck and go down the hatch. Now you see a door and another hatch. Crawl down through the next hatch, down in the storage room, pick up the giant piece of rope. Open the red chest and look inside it. You will pick up some fine wine, now open the kegs in the left side of the room (Guybrush will pick some gunpowder). Crawl back up through the hatch and enter the door. You are now in the kitchen. Pick up the pot from the table and open the cabin on the left, pick up a cereal box and open it. You will find a toy prize inside it, look at it, it’s a key! Walkthrough to the captain’s cabin and use the key in the cabinet, there’s a chest inside, pick it up, Guybrush will put in one the floor. Open it up and look inside it. Guybrush will pick up a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks. Look at the paper; it’s a recipe for a voodoo spell that will lead you mystically to Monkey Island TM . Walthrough to the kitchen, in the voodoo recipe are the things you need to put in the cooking pot: Cinnamon sticks, fine wine, jolly roger, gunpowder, ink, breath mints, the rubber chicken, and the cereal. That will create the voodoo spell that will transport you to Monkey Island TM, with a cutscene…

After the cutscene Guybrush is unconscious on the floor. Click anywhere on the screen and he will start to wake up. Walkthrough to the deck and you’ll discover that you are off the coast of Monkey Island TM. Walkthrough to the storage room and pick up some more gunpowder, Walkthrough to the deck and use the gunpowder in the cannon’s nozzle then use the giant piece of rope with the rear of the cannon. Now walkthrough to the kitchen and use the cereal box top bookmark in the cooking fire under the pot. You will now have a flaming mass. Walkthrough to the deck and light the fuse with the flaming mass and quickly use the pot, remember the circus? Guybrush will put on the pot and crawl in the cannon and get shot out. If you’re not fast enough you can try again.

Part III – Under Monkey Island TM

You’ll find yourself lying unconscious (again!) on the beach of Monkey Island TM, Herman Toothrot introduces himself and welcomes you to Monkey Island TM. Since you’re just lying there unconscious, Herman leaves into the jungle. Click anywhere on the screen and you will wake up. Pick up the banana lying next to the tree and read the note pinned to the tree. Walkthrough into the jungle and you’ll see the map of the island, Monkey Island TM is so huge that the whole map can’t fit on the screen (just be glad you don’t have to change disks every 15 minutes!) so walkthrough to the North West corner and walkthrough to the next screen. Now walkthrough to the fort, pick up the rope and the spyglass. Push the cannon, some gunpowder and a cannonball will fall out. Herman walks in, talk to him. When he leaves after your conversation, pick up the gunpowder and the cannonball. Leave the fort and walkthrough to the East of the map. Go to the place named river fork. There’s a note with a rock on top of it, pick up both of them and read the note. Examine at the rock, it’s a piece of flint, now walkthrough over the bridge and climb up the footholds. You’ll find some primitive art (which is a catapult) and another note, read it. Climb up the next set of footholds. You are now at the highest spot on Monkey Island TM. Herman will walk in again, talk to him some more till you’re bored I guess. When he’s gone you can see your ship on the horizon and a banana tree on the beach. You have to hit the banana tree with the catapult you saw before. Use the spyglass, Guybrush will look in the direction that the catapult is aiming. He’ll say he can see his ship, which you can hit with the catapult, but it is entirely optional to do that and changes the ending of the game!

Go down to the catapult. Push or pull a few times and use the spyglass to check which direction it is aiming. When Guybrush says he can see the banana tree you are ready to FIRE! Walthrough to the footholds and push the rock sitting at the edge of the cliff. Climb down to the bridge again and walkthrough over to the dam. Use the gunpowder on the dam then use the piece of flint with the cannonball. It will blow a hole in the dam and flood the blocked riverbed. Walkthrough to the place on the map named pond. Read the note. Herman will walk on again. Talk to him a little bit more, then pick up the rope from underneath the unhealthy looking man. Walkthrogh onto the map and head South, on the next screen of the map walkthrough to the beach. Walkthrough to the left and pick up the two new bananas on the beach. Walkthrough into the jungle again and head to the place marked crack. Here you need to the two ropes on the branch and the sturdy stump to get down to the oars. Climb down each rope and pick up the oars and climb back up then walkthrough onto the map. Walkthrough to the beach, use the oars with the rowboat and you have yourself a leisure craft to take round the island Row North East, then row around the peninsula and continue heading North, then land on the beach. Herman will once again walk on with some sage advice. Read the note and walkthrough to the jungle and head to the place named village. You are now in the Cannibals village, walkthrough to the left and pick up the bananas from the bowl of fruit. Now walkthrough to the right an the Cannibals will capture you. Talk to them for a while and you’ll end up locked in their guest hut. Read the memo, there is Herman’s banana picker, but you can’t take it just yet. Pick up the skull off the floor and open the loose board beneath it. Crawl down through the hole in the floor. You should escape while the Cannibals are talking to each other. Now walkthrough to the beach and row back to the Southern beach. Walkthrough to the jungle and go to the grey monkey blip, he’s running around on the map. Give him the five bananas you have. He will now follow you, YAY a pet monkey! Walkthrough into the jungle again Go North to the next screen of the map and walkthrough to the East to next screen, head to the place marked clearing. Walkthrough to the right until you get to the fence surrounding the Great Monkey Head. Pull the middle nose on the totem pole. The gate opens, but when you let go, it closes again. The monkey should then take over helpfully pulling the nose. Walkthrough the gate, there are some idols around the front of the Great Monkey Head. Pick up the little one named wimpy little idol. Now walkthrough back to the beach and row back to the Cannibals village. Walkthrough from the gate to the hut where you were imprisoned, walk back towards the entrance again. Now the Cannibals are back. Say, “Don’t eat me! I’ll give you anything!” The will ask for an item in return for sparing your life, offer them the wimpy little idol. They agree to the deal and leave. Now that the hut is open walkthrough the door. Pick up the banana picker and get out of there. Go to the right and you’ll meet Herman yet again, that guy sure gets around! Talk to him and tell him that you have his banana picker. Guybrush will give it to him and in return Herman will give Guybrush the monkey head key (A giant cotton bud, guess what hole in the great monkey head this goes in!). Now walkthrough and row all the way back to the Great Monkey Head. Use the monkey head key in it’s giant ear. The entrance will open up, walkthrough it’s mouth inside. Now go all the way to the right of the room until you get to the next room. It’s impossible to find your way through these catacombs, so go back outside and row all the way back to the Cannibals. Tell them that there is a way they can repay you. When they ask how, tell them that you are looking for somebody. Then tell them it’s okay, the people you’re looking for aren’t living. You’ll find out that they normally make a potion which gets rid of the undead. Ask them why they can’t do that now. They tell you that the principal ingredient is a rare root, which ghost pirate Captain LeChuck has stolen from them. Ask where he is hiding it and then ask why they can’t just go down there and kick him out. Then proclaim that you’re off to find LeChuck and get the root! The Cannibals tell you that you need something to find him, but they won’t tell you what it is. Ask them why they are talking in pig Latin. They then fess up and explain that it’s a Navigators head, and that you can’t find your way through the catacombs without it. When they start talking to each other again, give them the leaflet from your inventory. It can help them get a new head, so they give you the Navigators head. They tell you that the necklace makes it invisible to ghosts (how handy!) and that you should follow its nose and it will lead you to your nemesis LeChuck.

Now row and walkthrough all the way back to the Great Monkey Head and go inside. Walkthrough all the way to the right until you get to the next room. Now look at the Navigators head, Guybrush will say out loud which direction his nose is pointing, walkthrough in that direction and continue in this fashion in every room. Finally you will get to LeChuck’s ghost pirate ship. Now talk to the Navigators head and ask him for the necklace, eventually outright beg, until he gives it to you. Then use the necklace and you will see Guybrush put it on. Creep on board the ghost ship, Guybrush will be invisible and you’ll see some ghosts dancing around. Walkthrough to the left and open the door, inside you’ll find LeChuck, don’t move or he will hear you! Here use the magnetic compass you got from Stan on the key on the wall, exit the room and go past the dancing pirate ghosts and head down through the hatch. In the room you’ll find a sleeping ghost, walkthrough the next door. In the next room you’ll find chickens, pigs and the magical ingredient for the cannibals Ghost repellent the root, which is locked in a glowing crate. Pick up a chicken, and you will receive a feather. Walkthrough to the sleeping ghost and tickle his feet twice with the feather. He will drop a jug o’grog. Pick it up and walkthrough to the animals and use the key to unlock the hatch. Down here are some rats, a dish and a pot of cooking grease. Use the jug o’grog with the dish in front of the big rat. It will drink it and fall asleep. Pick up some of the cooking grease and walkthrough up to the deck, open the door next to the hatch. It squeaks very loudly, alerting the ghost pirates to you, so use the glob of grease on the door and open it again. Inside there is a ghost guarding Elaine’s cell, pick up the ghost tools from the wall. Walkthrough down to the glowing crate and use the ghost tools on it to open it up. Look inside it and Guybrush will pick up the root, then walkthrough to the deck, leave the ship and enter the cave. Guybrush will head out of the cave and row back to the Cannibals, cutscene…

You’ll now get the chance to talk to a real life three-headed monkey! The Cannibals then return and give you the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough the entrance to the village back into the jungle, you will row and walkthrough back to the ghost ship on auto pilot. But when you get there you discover that the ship has gone! Only ghost pirate Bob is still there, he explains that he dropped his head in the lava and the others wouldn’t wait for him! When you talk to him you find out that LeChuck has sailed to Mêlée Island TM to marry Elaine. After that your crew walks on screen, talk to them and you’ll all sail back to Mêlée Island TM (or Herman will show up and you’ll go back to Mêlée Island TM with him).

Part IV – Guybrush Kicks Butt

You start off back on the dock of Mêlée Island TM. Walkthrough to the right and a ghost will try to stop you, choose an option from the list and Guybrush will spray him in the face with the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough towards the church, on the corner you’ll meet a grim spectre. Talk to him and again select a comment, Guybrush will also spray him with the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough the archway and inside the church. There you’ll find Elaine and LeChuck about to get married! Yell anything and Guybrush will confront LeChuck. When you talk to him you’ll see Elaine lowering herself down behind LeChuck. Talk to Elaine and you’ll discover that the bride is actually two monkeys wearing the wedding dress. The monkeys have another bottle of ghost-melting root beer on them, but Guybrush scares them away and Elaine chases after them. Talk some more with LeChuck. Eventually he will super-uppercut Guybrush so that he goes soaring over the island. When you land up at Stan’s previously owned vessels you will land inside the grog machine, some money and some grog will fall on the ground. Stan will show up, but LeChuck will quickly dispense with him. When LeChuck pulls you out of the grog machine, quickly pick up the root beer and use it on LeChuck, final cutscene with Elaine
