Walk back to Phatt Island and head to the waterfall on the West, walk up the side and use Jojo on the tap. Walk down and into the newly discovered gaping hole, follow the tunnel to the cottage and head up to talk to the guy in the cottage and challenge him to a drinking contest. Once he has poured your mug of grog, use it on the plant pot on the far left of the scene, then use the near grog in your mug. You will then win the drinking contest!! Pick up the mug, use the mirror from the antiques shop with the picture frame in the cottage, open the shutters on the near window, and use the telescope on the grotesque statue outside, and note the brick you need to push (the one where the light falls), go inside and push the brick.

Walkthrough to the swamp and get the potion from her, she will tell you LeChuck is kidnapping Wally, when you get back to Wally’s you’ll find he has indeed been kidnapped by LeChuck. Pickup paper, and walk back to the swamp, open the crate. Use the crate and Guybrush will climb inside.

(cutscene) Walk up the stairs, towards the signs that point in lots of different directions, then walk into the alcove with the signs and turn right (inside the alcove). You come into a new room, with various skeletal parts on the wall. Look at the lyrics to the song that your ghost parents sang you, they will be written down no a piece of paper in your possession. The lyrics run “The X bone is connected to the Y bone”, “The Y bone is connected to the Z bone”, find the skeletal door which has X Y and Z shown in that order (from top to bottom). Push the door and walk through, do this again and again until you reach a new room, push the big door and you will see a small door appear within it. Walkthrough the door and pick up the Voodoo Key to the cells (cutscene).

You’ve now been captured by LeChuck (Oh No! Game Over!) Use the crazy straw in the green drink (remember the thick spit?), spit on the shield on the right, and keep doing this (it will change angle each time) until you put out the candle. (cutscene)

Open the goodie bag the fortune teller gave you, you get matches and some other things. Use the book of matches (cutscene with a BOOOOM!).

PART IV : Dinky Island – Monkey Island 2 Walkthrough

On the beach, pick up the bottle (that’s half in and out of the ocean), pick up the crowbar and the the martini glass, open the barrel and Guybrush picks up a cracker. Give the cracker to the parrot. Walk into the jungle and head left until you come to a tree with a bag hanging from it. Use the crowbar on the bottle, then use the broken bottle on the bag. Pick up the box of cracker mix, and walkthrough the jungle and head right, pick up the rope on the box by the pond, use the crowbar on the box and pick up the dynamite inside. Walkthrough to the beach, and use the Martini glass with the ocean. Use the Martini glass of water, in the still. Use the distilled water with the cracker mix. Give the two crackers to the parrot, and listen to his directions. Follow them until you come to the X, use the shovel on the X until Guybrush hits cement. Use the matches on the dynamite, and use the dynamite on the hole (BOOM! Lots of explosions in this game!). Use the rope with the crowbar, use the crowbar and rope with the twisted bars above the platform on your right (cutscene).

You find yourself in a darkened room. Scan the walls for a light switch (it should be on the right of the screen), once you’ve switched on the light switch, pick up the ticket from the remains of the treasure chest (cutscene). During your confrontation with LeChuck, he will transport you around the tunnels and you’ll appear in a random place in the underground tunnels.

In The First Aid Room (Furtherst Right)

Pick up the skull of one of your parents, open the drawer on the right and pick up the syringe, look at the bin and pick up the gloves from inside.

In The Store Cupboard (Full of Boxes)

Open all the boxes you can and pick up :- root beer, balloon and a pirate doll.

In The Room with the Grog Machine

Use the gloves and the balloon with the helium tank (if you use them while full of helium, you start to sing the Beegees!). Push the coin return button on the Grog machine, and a coin will roll out. Leave it where it lands, and when LeChuck confronts you in this room, he will bend over to pick it up. Grab LeChucks underpants when he bends over to pick up the coin (Yuk!)

When confronted again by LeChuck, give him the complementary handkerchief you were given by Stan (again, gross!). Walkthrough to the elevator (now you are carrying helium, you are light enough to use it!). Wait for LeChuck to appear then use the lever, trapping LeChucks beard in the door.

Use the crispy beard bits, the doll, the underwear, the handkerchief and the skull with the goodie bag. Now you have a voodoo doll to fight back with!! Wait for LeChuck to attack you, and use the hyperdermic syringe with the voodoo doll of LeChuck. Do what you like, but twisting his leg will kill him!! (cutscene) See you next time!!

To be continued! ….

Part I – The Three Trials.

If I could start this walkthrough with a little bit of a review, it would be simply that The Curse of Monkey Island TM is one of the greatest point and click adventure games of all time! Now it has been re-released as a special edition with voice actors from the newer games, as well as improved graphical animation to introduce this classic point and click adventure game to a whole new generation

The game begins with a little preamble none of which is supposed to make any sense to you yet!

Secret of Monkey Island - The Scumm Bar

walk down the mountain side after you’ve spoken with the lookout guy, then head to the right until you come to The Scumm Bar (TM). Enter. You don’t have to talk to anyone here, but if you are new to Monkey Island it will help build background. You could probably start by talking to ‘Mancomb Seepgood’, or the dog.

Walkthrough to the right past the curtain and you will find the three important-looking pirates. Talk to the pirates, tell them you want to be a mighty pirate, they will mention “the tree trials” – mastery of the sword, thievery and treasure – er – huntery. Wait until you see the cook walkthrough to the left of the curtain and sneak into the kitchen on the right. Pick up the hunk of meat from the table, the pot from underneath, use the meat in the cooking pot (on the stove), then pick it up again (it’s now stewed meat). Open the door on the right and walkthrough to the far right. Guybrush kicks the plank, disturbing the seagull. Keep doing this until you can pick the red herring. Leave the Scumm Bar (TM) cutscene…

When the cutscene has finished, exit back the way you came towards the lookout point and walkthrough to the top right until you come to the map of Mêlée Island TM. Hover over the blip just to the North East of where you are, marked “clearing’. Enter the circus tent you find, talk to the Fettucini brothers. They will ask if you want to try a death defying feat being fired out of their cannon. Agree to give it a try, and when they ask for your helmet, show them the pot. You will be fired out of the cannon, and when you say something the Fettucini brothers they will breathe a sigh of relief, and give you 478 pieces of eight! woohoo!

Leave the tent and walkthrough onto the map, then walk back to the lookout point, past the Scumm Bar (TM) and through into town. Speak to the citizen of Mêlée and tell him your name is Sven, he will give you a map to the legendary lost treasure of Mêlée Island (or is it?) for 100 pieces of eight. Buy it from him. Speak to the three pirates further on the left, hover your mouse over the rat until it runs away and talk to them. Keep going until they give you the minutes (and two pieces of eight!).

Next, go through the first door on the right, pickup the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle from on top of the trunk. Walkthrough the shop to the right talk with the voodoo lady. She will tell your fortune, talk to her about everything, leave her house and continue through the archway.

You will hear someone saying “Psssst” from the alley. Walk into the alley. Here you will meet the law of the land, Fester Shinetop. . Talk to him and leave the alley when you are done. Enter the right door. It leads into the shop. When you enter the shopkeeper will start talking to you, if he’s not there ring the bell and he will come toddling along. Go up the stairs and pick up the shovel next to the safe. Go down again and pick up the sword on -top of the red chest. Go talk to the shopkeeper and tell him you wish to buy the shovel and the sword. Don’t ask him who you can test the sword on yet, that will come later.

Leave the shop and walkthrough up to the top of the cliff and onto the map. Go to the place named “house”, it’s the area furthest to the right. You will be stopped at a bridge, where a troll blocks your path. Talk with him and then give him the red herring. He will then let you pass. (Notice that it’s George Lucas in a costume when he’s eating it!) Click the area called “house” again. When you get there you will see a house with a sign outside it. It is Captain Smirk’s house and he takes 30 pieces of eight for a sword fighting lesson. Knock on the door and Captain Smirk will greet you. Talk with him and get him to train you. During this conversation you’ll also hear about Carla, the Sword Master. When he agrees to train Guybrush they go into his house. You’ll see a cutscene of Guybrush getting trained. (You have to choose a few lines of speech during the cutscene.) Now you’re trained in sword fighting!

Now you have to learn some insults so you can beat Carla, the Sword Master, and complete one of the three trials. Go back onto the map you will now see a lot of other white dots running around on the map. These are other pirates and you have to fight them to learn the sword fighting insults and witty comebacks. Say the line prepare to die. The sword fight will begin. The pirate will use an insult and you have to respond with the appropriate comback. You probably won’t win the first few times, but you will gradually learn some insults and comebacks. Keep doing this with other pirate also until one of them says “Wow! Youپfre good enough to fight the Sword Master.” Now you are ready to fight the Sword Master! To find her, go back to the shop and talk to the storekeeper. Say, “I’m looking for the Sword Master of Mêlée Island TM”. The storekeeperagrees to hike all the way over to the Sword Masterand ask her if he can show you her hideout.

As soon as he has left the shop, follow him! Open the door and go outside. You’ll see him walking away, follow him. When you get to the map, the storekeeper is the only blip on the map, follow him into the fork. Once inside the fork, keep following him and you’ll soon find the Sword Master. After the storekeeper has left, approach her and talk to her. Soon you’ll be in a fight with her. Now you have to fight her like you fought the pirates, but she uses other insults so you have to find a comeback that matches it. When you win she’ll give you a T-shirt to prove this.

Walkthrough into the forest and choose one of the paths, it doesn’t matter which one you choose. You’ll end up near some yellow flowers, pick them (Guybrush notes how this is not very pirate like). Now you need to find the buried treasure, to do this you need to look at the map you bought from the citizen of Mêlée. First go back to the first part of the forest and look at the map, if it says “Back! Two-Three-Four!! Just ignore the “Two-Three-Four!” simply follow the first word. Left being left and right, right but back is away from screen. Now, simply follow the map and you’ll soon be at a part of the forest that looks a little bit different than the rest. Walkthrough to the right of the screen, woohoo! There’s the X! Use the shovel on the X You’ll see a cutscene of Guybrush digging and finding another T-shirt to prove he has found the legendary lost treasure of Mêlée Island TM.

Walkthrough to the town and past the shop to the governor’s mansion. You now have to steal the Idol of Many Hands. There are guard dogs blocking you, use the yellow petal with the stewed meat and hey presto you’ve got meat with condiment. Give it to the guard dogs and they’ll fall asleep. Open the front door and go inside Governor Marley’s mansion. Open the door next to the vase and go in, Fester Shinetop will appear. He tries to arrest you and there’s a big fight scene. You escape and Fester Shinetop is trapped. As you realized during the fight, you need a file to open the lock to the Idol of Many Hands.

Leave the mansion and walkthrough to the jail. Inside is a prisoner called Otis. Talk to him and you’ll learn that Guybrush wont talk to him because he has very bad breath! Go buy some breath mints in the store and give them to Otis. Talk to him about everything. Give him the gopher repellent. He’ll then give you a carrot cake. Open the carrot cake, you’ll find a file inside it. Walkthrough to the mansion and crawl through the hole in the wall that Guybrush made during the fight). Another cutscene…

When asked for an explanation, choose any option. Now you’ll meet the gorgeous governor Marley and she saves your rugged behind. After you flirt with governor Marley, walktthrough the front door outside again. Cutscene…

Now you need to get up. Pick up the idol. Guybrush will pick up a sword and climb up. When you get up you’ll see a ghost ship sailing away, cutscene…

Now you need to get a ship and gather a crew of three people, but first walkthrough to the Scumm Bar and you will find the cook crying at the table where the three important-looking-pirates were. Talk to him about everything. When you are leaving, pick up all the mugs you can find. (There are five of them, grab them all). Walkthrough to the world map towards the group of lights there called lights. Here you will be greeted by the ultimate comedy video game character Stan. He’ll show you some ships, ask about the one that’s half submerged. Get him to show you a ship and then say, “Actually, I was hoping to get one on credit”. He’ll say he doesn’t give credit, but that if you had a job the storekeeper might.

Leave Stan’s Previously Owned Vessels and walkthrough talk to the storekeeper, Stan gave you a compass when you left. Tell the storekeeper you need some credit, then lie and say you do have a job. He’ll go get a note from the safe, write down the combination he uses. He’ll then ask you what your job is, you’ll have to fess up and say you don’t have a job. The storekeeper will put the note back in the safe, this gives you another chance to see the combination. When he gets back, tell him you are looking for the Sword Master again, as before he’ll hike all the way over to her again and you are left all alone in the store. Go up and repeat the combination. (Push or pull the lever). Get the note out, now you have a note of 5000 pieces of eight! Woohoo crime does pay!

Walkthrough to Stan and tell him you haven’t got much to spend. He’ll show you the ship we want. Then tell him you’ve got a note from the storekeeper. Stan tells you he wants 10000 pieces of eight for it, but you only have 5000, so you need to barter. Ask him about extras and say, “I think I can live without that particular piece of junk” to everything he says. Do that for a while and then say “Enough about extras, already” and ask him what he thinks it’s worth. If the price is 7300, tell him you didn’t want the ship anyway. He calls you back and says he now think it’s worth 6300 pieces of eight. Make him the offer of 5000 pieces of eight. He’ll take it and you’ve got a ship, YAY!

Now you need to get 3 crew members, first we will go get the Sword Master, walkthrough to her hideout again. click on the blip named Sword Master on the map. Talk to her and tell her that the governor has been kidnapped. She will join your crew. Walkthrough to the map, cutscenec

On the island map click the blip to the North East called Island. When you get there you’ll see Hook Island. To get over there; use the rubber chicken with the cable Wheee! Open the door to the house and go in. Now you will meet Meathook. (Ask him about his tattoo! For the lulz!)Tell him the governor has been kidnapped, and that you are gathering a crew to go after her. He’ll agree to you being the captain on one condition, that you prove your courage by touching the winged devil! Open the small door and see a parrot! Just touch and Meathook is a member of your crew.

Walkthrough to the prison and talk to Otis and tell him that the governor has been kidnapped. Ask him if he will join your crew if you let him out. He agrees so now walkthrough to the Scumm Bar kitchen. Fill one of the mugs with grog from the barrel. The grog dissolves through the mug very fast; so on your way back to the prison poor it into the other mugs before it dissolves through all of them one at a time. When you reach the prison, use the grog on the lock of Otis’ cell. Now walkthrough to the dock, beside the Scumm Bar. There you’ll meet Stan and the other crew members. They will ask some questions, answer them and you’ll be on your way, cutscenec

Part II – The journey

After the cutscene, where you discover that your crew is rather lazy, you start of fin the captain’s cabin. Open the drawer, look inside it and Guybrush will pick up an old book. It is the captain’s log. If you read it, this is a story all about how a Captain and a Mr. Toothrot mysteriously ended up on Monkey Island TM and you’ll discover that they used the top of a box of breakfast cereal as a bookmark. Pick up the feathered quill and the ink well from the desk. Leave the room and climb up the rope ladder by the mast, when you are at the top of it pick up the Jolly Roger from the crow’s nest, clamber back down to the deck and go down the hatch. Now you see a door and another hatch. Crawl down through the next hatch, down in the storage room, pick up the giant piece of rope. Open the red chest and look inside it. You will pick up some fine wine, now open the kegs in the left side of the room (Guybrush will pick some gunpowder). Crawl back up through the hatch and enter the door. You are now in the kitchen. Pick up the pot from the table and open the cabin on the left, pick up a cereal box and open it. You will find a toy prize inside it, look at it, it’s a key! Walkthrough to the captain’s cabin and use the key in the cabinet, there’s a chest inside, pick it up, Guybrush will put in one the floor. Open it up and look inside it. Guybrush will pick up a piece of paper and some cinnamon sticks. Look at the paper; it’s a recipe for a voodoo spell that will lead you mystically to Monkey Island TM . Walthrough to the kitchen, in the voodoo recipe are the things you need to put in the cooking pot: Cinnamon sticks, fine wine, jolly roger, gunpowder, ink, breath mints, the rubber chicken, and the cereal. That will create the voodoo spell that will transport you to Monkey Island TM, with a cutscene…

After the cutscene Guybrush is unconscious on the floor. Click anywhere on the screen and he will start to wake up. Walkthrough to the deck and you’ll discover that you are off the coast of Monkey Island TM. Walkthrough to the storage room and pick up some more gunpowder, Walkthrough to the deck and use the gunpowder in the cannon’s nozzle then use the giant piece of rope with the rear of the cannon. Now walkthrough to the kitchen and use the cereal box top bookmark in the cooking fire under the pot. You will now have a flaming mass. Walkthrough to the deck and light the fuse with the flaming mass and quickly use the pot, remember the circus? Guybrush will put on the pot and crawl in the cannon and get shot out. If you’re not fast enough you can try again.

Part III – Under Monkey Island TM

You’ll find yourself lying unconscious (again!) on the beach of Monkey Island TM, Herman Toothrot introduces himself and welcomes you to Monkey Island TM. Since you’re just lying there unconscious, Herman leaves into the jungle. Click anywhere on the screen and you will wake up. Pick up the banana lying next to the tree and read the note pinned to the tree. Walkthrough into the jungle and you’ll see the map of the island, Monkey Island TM is so huge that the whole map can’t fit on the screen (just be glad you don’t have to change disks every 15 minutes!) so walkthrough to the North West corner and walkthrough to the next screen. Now walkthrough to the fort, pick up the rope and the spyglass. Push the cannon, some gunpowder and a cannonball will fall out. Herman walks in, talk to him. When he leaves after your conversation, pick up the gunpowder and the cannonball. Leave the fort and walkthrough to the East of the map. Go to the place named river fork. There’s a note with a rock on top of it, pick up both of them and read the note. Examine at the rock, it’s a piece of flint, now walkthrough over the bridge and climb up the footholds. You’ll find some primitive art (which is a catapult) and another note, read it. Climb up the next set of footholds. You are now at the highest spot on Monkey Island TM. Herman will walk in again, talk to him some more till you’re bored I guess. When he’s gone you can see your ship on the horizon and a banana tree on the beach. You have to hit the banana tree with the catapult you saw before. Use the spyglass, Guybrush will look in the direction that the catapult is aiming. He’ll say he can see his ship, which you can hit with the catapult, but it is entirely optional to do that and changes the ending of the game!

Go down to the catapult. Push or pull a few times and use the spyglass to check which direction it is aiming. When Guybrush says he can see the banana tree you are ready to FIRE! Walthrough to the footholds and push the rock sitting at the edge of the cliff. Climb down to the bridge again and walkthrough over to the dam. Use the gunpowder on the dam then use the piece of flint with the cannonball. It will blow a hole in the dam and flood the blocked riverbed. Walkthrough to the place on the map named pond. Read the note. Herman will walk on again. Talk to him a little bit more, then pick up the rope from underneath the unhealthy looking man. Walkthrogh onto the map and head South, on the next screen of the map walkthrough to the beach. Walkthrough to the left and pick up the two new bananas on the beach. Walkthrough into the jungle again and head to the place marked crack. Here you need to the two ropes on the branch and the sturdy stump to get down to the oars. Climb down each rope and pick up the oars and climb back up then walkthrough onto the map. Walkthrough to the beach, use the oars with the rowboat and you have yourself a leisure craft to take round the island Row North East, then row around the peninsula and continue heading North, then land on the beach. Herman will once again walk on with some sage advice. Read the note and walkthrough to the jungle and head to the place named village. You are now in the Cannibals village, walkthrough to the left and pick up the bananas from the bowl of fruit. Now walkthrough to the right an the Cannibals will capture you. Talk to them for a while and you’ll end up locked in their guest hut. Read the memo, there is Herman’s banana picker, but you can’t take it just yet. Pick up the skull off the floor and open the loose board beneath it. Crawl down through the hole in the floor. You should escape while the Cannibals are talking to each other. Now walkthrough to the beach and row back to the Southern beach. Walkthrough to the jungle and go to the grey monkey blip, he’s running around on the map. Give him the five bananas you have. He will now follow you, YAY a pet monkey! Walkthrough into the jungle again Go North to the next screen of the map and walkthrough to the East to next screen, head to the place marked clearing. Walkthrough to the right until you get to the fence surrounding the Great Monkey Head. Pull the middle nose on the totem pole. The gate opens, but when you let go, it closes again. The monkey should then take over helpfully pulling the nose. Walkthrough the gate, there are some idols around the front of the Great Monkey Head. Pick up the little one named wimpy little idol. Now walkthrough back to the beach and row back to the Cannibals village. Walkthrough from the gate to the hut where you were imprisoned, walk back towards the entrance again. Now the Cannibals are back. Say, “Don’t eat me! I’ll give you anything!” The will ask for an item in return for sparing your life, offer them the wimpy little idol. They agree to the deal and leave. Now that the hut is open walkthrough the door. Pick up the banana picker and get out of there. Go to the right and you’ll meet Herman yet again, that guy sure gets around! Talk to him and tell him that you have his banana picker. Guybrush will give it to him and in return Herman will give Guybrush the monkey head key (A giant cotton bud, guess what hole in the great monkey head this goes in!). Now walkthrough and row all the way back to the Great Monkey Head. Use the monkey head key in it’s giant ear. The entrance will open up, walkthrough it’s mouth inside. Now go all the way to the right of the room until you get to the next room. It’s impossible to find your way through these catacombs, so go back outside and row all the way back to the Cannibals. Tell them that there is a way they can repay you. When they ask how, tell them that you are looking for somebody. Then tell them it’s okay, the people you’re looking for aren’t living. You’ll find out that they normally make a potion which gets rid of the undead. Ask them why they can’t do that now. They tell you that the principal ingredient is a rare root, which ghost pirate Captain LeChuck has stolen from them. Ask where he is hiding it and then ask why they can’t just go down there and kick him out. Then proclaim that you’re off to find LeChuck and get the root! The Cannibals tell you that you need something to find him, but they won’t tell you what it is. Ask them why they are talking in pig Latin. They then fess up and explain that it’s a Navigators head, and that you can’t find your way through the catacombs without it. When they start talking to each other again, give them the leaflet from your inventory. It can help them get a new head, so they give you the Navigators head. They tell you that the necklace makes it invisible to ghosts (how handy!) and that you should follow its nose and it will lead you to your nemesis LeChuck.

Now row and walkthrough all the way back to the Great Monkey Head and go inside. Walkthrough all the way to the right until you get to the next room. Now look at the Navigators head, Guybrush will say out loud which direction his nose is pointing, walkthrough in that direction and continue in this fashion in every room. Finally you will get to LeChuck’s ghost pirate ship. Now talk to the Navigators head and ask him for the necklace, eventually outright beg, until he gives it to you. Then use the necklace and you will see Guybrush put it on. Creep on board the ghost ship, Guybrush will be invisible and you’ll see some ghosts dancing around. Walkthrough to the left and open the door, inside you’ll find LeChuck, don’t move or he will hear you! Here use the magnetic compass you got from Stan on the key on the wall, exit the room and go past the dancing pirate ghosts and head down through the hatch. In the room you’ll find a sleeping ghost, walkthrough the next door. In the next room you’ll find chickens, pigs and the magical ingredient for the cannibals Ghost repellent the root, which is locked in a glowing crate. Pick up a chicken, and you will receive a feather. Walkthrough to the sleeping ghost and tickle his feet twice with the feather. He will drop a jug o’grog. Pick it up and walkthrough to the animals and use the key to unlock the hatch. Down here are some rats, a dish and a pot of cooking grease. Use the jug o’grog with the dish in front of the big rat. It will drink it and fall asleep. Pick up some of the cooking grease and walkthrough up to the deck, open the door next to the hatch. It squeaks very loudly, alerting the ghost pirates to you, so use the glob of grease on the door and open it again. Inside there is a ghost guarding Elaine’s cell, pick up the ghost tools from the wall. Walkthrough down to the glowing crate and use the ghost tools on it to open it up. Look inside it and Guybrush will pick up the root, then walkthrough to the deck, leave the ship and enter the cave. Guybrush will head out of the cave and row back to the Cannibals, cutscene…

You’ll now get the chance to talk to a real life three-headed monkey! The Cannibals then return and give you the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough the entrance to the village back into the jungle, you will row and walkthrough back to the ghost ship on auto pilot. But when you get there you discover that the ship has gone! Only ghost pirate Bob is still there, he explains that he dropped his head in the lava and the others wouldn’t wait for him! When you talk to him you find out that LeChuck has sailed to Mêlée Island TM to marry Elaine. After that your crew walks on screen, talk to them and you’ll all sail back to Mêlée Island TM (or Herman will show up and you’ll go back to Mêlée Island TM with him).

Part IV – Guybrush Kicks Butt

You start off back on the dock of Mêlée Island TM. Walkthrough to the right and a ghost will try to stop you, choose an option from the list and Guybrush will spray him in the face with the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough towards the church, on the corner you’ll meet a grim spectre. Talk to him and again select a comment, Guybrush will also spray him with the magic seltzer bottle. Walkthrough the archway and inside the church. There you’ll find Elaine and LeChuck about to get married! Yell anything and Guybrush will confront LeChuck. When you talk to him you’ll see Elaine lowering herself down behind LeChuck. Talk to Elaine and you’ll discover that the bride is actually two monkeys wearing the wedding dress. The monkeys have another bottle of ghost-melting root beer on them, but Guybrush scares them away and Elaine chases after them. Talk some more with LeChuck. Eventually he will super-uppercut Guybrush so that he goes soaring over the island. When you land up at Stan’s previously owned vessels you will land inside the grog machine, some money and some grog will fall on the ground. Stan will show up, but LeChuck will quickly dispense with him. When LeChuck pulls you out of the grog machine, quickly pick up the root beer and use it on LeChuck, final cutscene with Elaine…

TO BE CONTINUED!

Tales of Monkey Island Walkthrough

Following is the complete solution to Tales of Monkey Island : Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, which comes to you courtesy of my awesome sidekick Michael. Warning : Spoilers Ahoy! Do NOT read any further if you wish to savour the puzzles.

Okay, so NEVER FORGET WHAT GAME YOU ARE PLAYING! It’s Monkey Island TM on another crazy adventure, it’s a tricksy one!

Guybrush Threepwood - Mighty Pirate, Tales of Monkey Island, Launch of the Narwhal

Tales of Monkey Island Walkthrough : Spoilers Ahoy!

Tales if Monkey Island : Le Chuck’s Ship

The Game starts with a long drawn out cutscene as with tradition. After which you are to construct a voodoo zombie pirate killing sword. To do this you must walk to the top of your ship and pick up the monkey coffin. Inside is a seltzer bottle full of flat rootbeer, which is the ingredient you need.

As with previous Monkey Island titles it isn’t that straightforward. Add the breath-mints to the seltzer bottle and you will have fizzy rootbeer which you must combine with the sword… cutscene…

Okay so now we remember it’s Monkey Island TM and we go and talk to Elaine, tell her to throw the rope, she will get you onto Le Chuck’s Ship. Once there go to Elaine’s end of the ship and use the sword on the roots of the plant. Drop the roots and the breath-mints into the barrel of grog and use the sword with it. Then use the sword with Le Chuck and you’re in business… cutscene…

Tales if Monkey Island : Flotsam Island

You now arrive on Flotsam Island with no hope of ever leaving (but This is THE Guybrush Threepwood here folks! He escaped from Monkey Island!). You talk to everyone and they tend to give you hints. Talk to the reporter and then walkthrough the town to the glassblower, ask him about the alphabet sale and then for a free vowel and you shall receive a “U-Tube” (YouTube lol!) which will be useful later. Walkthrough to the Screaming Narwhal and talk to the captain. You may notice that the sign to the left of the gang plank has half a jolly roger skull and crossbones, but it looks uncannily like a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle which is a traditional recurring theme. This gives you a clue to look in the socks on the crank line. Inside you find the Captains membership card to the exclusive pirate club you may have seen earlier. Now go to the beach and walk off towards the map on world map view it will say “Entrance to Jungle” walkthrough the pillars and talk to the portly pirate playing with dolls. He will tell you of a rare porcelain pirate “Action Figurine”. Tell him you saw it over there and then steal a pink pyjama pirate figure. Take the figurine to the reporter and dip it in the ink barrel next to him. Go into the club with your ID card… cutscene…

Once out on the street you should see a broken glass and in there will be a cocktail sword which when combiuned with the doll you have will form a “Ninja Pirate Pete”! Take this back to the portly pirate and ask him for the map he has. Walk into the jungle and find the wishing well, from there follow the animal noises you hear in accordance with the map (spontaneously generated as with Monkey Kombat from Monkey Island 4!). You will find someone beat you to the treasure but you place the newly made replica doll in the hole. (This is why I love the Monkey Island TM series!). Go back to portly pirate and give him back the map… cutscene…

The Tales of Monkey Island - Launch of the Narwhal - Flotsam Island

Now walkthrough the jungle and you will discover a pile of bombs and a flyer for a pirate hunter scattered around the jungle when you find the calendar head north and you will find a new location, the creepy shack. Head back to the Screaming Narwhal and try to climb the anchor chain… cutscene…

Now that the dock is on fire you can light your bombs but be quick to get them in the underwear on the crank line before they blow up in your pocket! Once the bomb is in the underwear you have all the time in the world before the fuse burns out and it blows up, but if you talk to the Captain it will blow or if you leave the scene it will blow or if you use the crank it will blow up in your face and knock you off the dock! Use the clothesline itself (involves split second timing!) and it will blow the captain off the deck and so you become captain of the Screaming Narwhal… cutscene…

The reporter will tell you to go see deep gut in his creepy shack, walkthrough the jungle to get there and use the password he gave you “Deadline”. After the dialogue click on parrot skeleton, walk around and pick up the “Interesting bottle”, pick up the parrot also. Walk out and pick up the weather vane, then walkthrough to the docks.

Talk to the pirate glassblower, ask him about unbreakable bottle, use chain to board the Screaming Narwhal, walkthrough to the deck and pick up the cheese wheel. Fire the cannon and the bottle breaker is available and then leave the ship and pick up unbreakable bottle breaker. Walkthrough to the house to the right of Screaming Narwhal where the Doctor lives (he was getting busy if you tried this before you could hear him…

Tales of Monkey Island - Launch of the Narwhal

lol) pick up the flower pot and knock on the door. After the dialogue there is a… cutscene…

The chair can be turned left, right backwards, frontwards or put in horizontal or vertical position!

Here is the very complicated sequence!

Right-horizontal – click on the key.

Back-horizontal – click on the monkey’s cage the monkey is freed

Left-horizontal – click on the bell and the monkey changes picture to rat-machine

Left-vertical – click on the right pedal and the monkey goes to the rat-machine

Left-vertical – click on the left pedal and the monkey gets a shock & knocks down the picture!

Front-vertical – click on the picture of Guybrush’s hand.

Left-horizontal – click on the pictures.

Left-horizontal – click on the bell and the monkey changes picture to the skeleton hand)

Left-vertical – click on the right pedal and the monkey goes to the skeleton with the key)

Left-vertical – click on the left pedal. (the monkey gets another shock and the key sticks to it’s tail)

Left-horizontal – click on the bell. the monkey changes picture to the pirate

Left-vertical – click on the right pedal. The monkey goes to Guybrush

Use unbreakable bottle breaker with unbreakable bottle (OBVIOUSLY!) Walkthrough to the beach and talk to the crusty looking pirate in front of the courthouse until he hands you the ancient crystal. Use the eye of the Manatee with the ancient scroll. Also while you’re here, use the cheese with jail carvings under the cell bars. Walkthrough to jungle entrance and head north. That cloud on the map indicates that you need to look at the weather vane in your inventory and follow the arrow. Use Hemlock’s map with the altar. Guybrush will let you know if you are doing it right or wrong by telling you, if you go astray start again from the beginning.

Use the ancient tool with the clamshell, this will open up all of the idols all over Flotsam island. Use the ancient weather vane with the mysterious idol and click on the mysterious idol. Match the faces on the weather vane with the idol .Use the ancient tool with the clamshell when you are done… cutscene…

Walkthrough to the right and the map of the jungle will appear, walkthrough to the enigmatic idol, repeat the steps from the previous idol. Guybrush will make a comment about the missing nose, use the flower pot with idol. Use the ancient tool with the clamshell… cutscene…

Walkthrough to the right and approach the strange idol, use the ancient weather vane on it, then use the cheese wheel on it. Walkthrough to the right twice to the altar. If you get lost, head out of the jungle, enter it and walkthrough up then right. Use the phrase “King Louis”.

Use the “U-Tube” (lol) with the rifle with precise timing
Use messed up idol, there is no way of putting the weather vane here, so you need to listen to the Marquis, if he makes a satisfied (not a whelp of pain!) sound, the part is in the correct place… cutscene…

Walkthrough to the upper deck and use the steering wheel, then walkthrough to the lower deck and fire the cannon (timing is crucial here too!). The tar will then spill out before Winslow takes hold of the wheel. Walkthrough to the front of the main mast, otherwise you will get stuck and have to repeat that puzzle! ARGH! Grab the map hanging on the wall of the quarters and then walkthrough to Winslow and talk to him… cutscene…

WOOHOO! Part One Nailed and wait patiently for Part Two to be released so you can test your mettle again!

In my neglected retro video games review section, I have a rare treat I’ve been meaning to post for some time. Dragons Breath ( A.K.A Dragon Lord) existed for a brief period early in 1990 for the Atari ST, PC and AMIGA machines, written by Palace Software who declared bankruptcy later that year. To be honest, the only reason I ended up with a copy was because I bought the Atari STe 520 Turbo Pack (mostly because it included STOS – a great game programming language, along with other great titles such as Outrun, Bloodmoney). It wasn’t until weeks later, when I was bored with the other 7 games, that I literally found Dragons Breath in the box. It’s probably quite ironic that I showed it to my school pals who all became quickly addicted. By the time it became a regular game for us to play, it was no longer available to buy, and thanks to some careful copy protection was very difficult to pirate.

[ Download Dragons Breath (Atari ST version) | Dragons Breath Video | Dragons Breath Spells ]

Dragons Breath by Palace Software – A Game Ahead of It’s Time

It was Pokemon, decades before it’s time – you play as one of three reclusive alchemists living in the the mythical land of Anrea who breed dragons, train them, use them to capture villages and rule, enforcing taxes which go to pay for your dragons upkeep, food, and to buy potions to allow you to cast spells to make your dragons stronger or villages more prosperous. You also have a supply of dragon eggs, and incubators (the heating bill of incubating new dragon eggs is astronomical!). You personally name and train all the new dragons, giving it an inescapable appeal similar to the Tamagochi / Pokemon games. Especially as some of the dragons will end up fighting to the very death during the course of the game.

The Dragons Breath Land of Anrea

The objective of Dragons Breath is to use your dragons to capture three parts of a magical Talisman – said to be scattered about the land, and towns – the possession of which is said to unlock the secrets of immortality. The dragons will fight each other, fight to defend territory, each having stats which depend on a combination of their physical health, any spells you cast and their overall experience. There are logs of daily events that tells you of any princesses or prominent members of the land of Anrea that have been kidnapped or taken hostage – and should you choose – your dragons can risk their own skin by intervening in order for you to collect the reward money. The logs also say which villages do battle with other villages, allowing you to take sides and help to decide a war if this suits your goals for any particular reason.

Oceans and Oceans of Potions

Dragons Breath Chemistry Set

Dragons Breath even has elements of games such as Populous – and one of my favourite tactic was invading an already well developed city, and then using a spell I discovered using Acrus (Normal, Heat) and Churl (Heat, Grind) that would double their technology and add about half it’s population again, which I would repeat until it was a sprawling metropolis armed to the teeth with futuristic guns. The people begin to love you, and you can even call the dragon back with the magic whistle, and the people of the city will still willingly let you rule them and tax them to hell because of their amazing prosperity.

Most Dragon spells, start with something like Rasgon, here is a complete list of spells I know, combined with some I have found on the Internet:

It is strange that I bought the Atari STe Turbo Pack for other reasons, and never even played this game until I was bored of the others, only to find that by this time it was no longer on sale!

Mario – Cutting Edge or Surprisingly Average?

There is one thing which has always puzzled me. Mario Brothers. A household name, and yet as we reflect on the early Mario games we might even say that Nintendo didn’t introduce anything new. The style was certainly not cutting edge and by no means set the standard for the genre. Why was it such a success? Super Mario Brothers (the side-scrolling version most remember) was actually released in 1985, by which time platform games were already mainstream and this almost seemed old-hat. Games like Activisions Pitfall (1982) which was a great success in selling 2.6 million copies. Why is it that Mario is the one history remembers and Pitfall isn’t?

Perhaps it will help to see the genre in context. In the beginning Nintendo released Mario Brothers, (1983) which was a two-player, single-screen game with a very linear style. It was a format similar to Joust (1982) and designed to compete against games like this and other very simple coin-op arcade games in the early 80’s. Except there was a slight twist – we recognise Mario from a previous game, Donkey Kong. Perhaps we might look to include this as one of the early ancestors?

By the time the iconic Super Mario Brothers was released in 1985, Nintendo’s actors had something few other games did – a history. They had outlived their previous games to be re-incarnated. And with this history came a stronger sense of identity. But Shigiru Miyamotos Mario Universe wouldn’t stop there. Super Mario Brothers 2 allowed the user to choose between four characters and seemed to introduce more of a story-like element. Perhaps one of the biggest clues in the theatre surrounding the character selection screen? Then came Mario Brothers 3, only this time there were maps! The user could select a path through this psychadelic fantasy world that was on offer, and the game no longer seemed so linear.

Psychadelic Fantasy World that was on Offer

By the time Nintendo were starting to establish themselves as major players in the industry, the new Super Nintendo / Super Famicom was launched (almost especially) for Super Mario World in 1990.

The name said it all. Super Mario World. The universe had continued to grow. And – interestingly – it almost seemed as though the computer itself had simply become a means of storytelling. This was a complete role-reversal for the one-off games with a limited lifespan designed for one system. Here we now had characters that would live on beyond the hardware they were featured on, only to be reincarnated with ever more colours, pixels and detail.

On completing the games, the ending now regularly featured long credit sequences where the baddies would be re-introduced for one last bow. Perhaps this exploiting the fourth dimension is some of the subliminal tricks used to help give the characters that depth? To let you know that you will likely see them again in the next incarnation of their world. Perhaps this is the spirit we need to keep in mind when looking for the significance of the theatre curtains in Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3.

This – I believe is where Marios X-factor lies. This process had helped turn the very characters names into household names. Everything from childrens’ pajyamas to alarm clocks. It even had it’s own cartoon spin-off series! The Nintendo 64 – again – was released almost specifically for Mario 64 which tried to combine the better elements of Mario 3 with a map the user could wander around in, and straight-forward platform levels. Except now the Universe was three-demensional and new ideas could be tried out.

New Technologies To Retell an Old Story

Even today, several decades later this pattern is continuing with Nintendo now looking to use the newer technologies in the consoles to find a way to tell the Mario story using it.

The characters had managed to leave the computer and become real in perhaps a similar way to reading a novel. It offers a window to an alternate world which we imagine might continue even when we arn’t playing.

Very different to the games on the atari 2600 where you would switch them off and go play in the street with your friends.

Does Doom deserve all the acknowledgement it usually gets for being an important piece of video game history?

Into the Unknown

The truth is, Doom posed a very real dilemma for innocent gamers. Until now, video games had been largely tame, pixel-busting blocks and friendly characeters. Suddenly, here was a dark and evil game where an array of weapons were used to kill zombies and demons from hell.

To acknowledge Doom, we must also salute Wolfenstein for two separate reasons. It’s pioneering work in the 3d shoot-em-up genre paved the way for the technology in Doom, but it had also managed to cause a great stir, because it featured Nazis. But – secretly – I also think the truest core of the issue was that we simply wern’t used to seeing blood on the computer screen! We wern’t used to seeing people getting shot and dying. And now – here was Doom – and even more impressive, very dark and grim universe with much better graphics with which to express that violence. It seemed much more real, and had no cartoon element as Wolfenstein almost seemed to have.

Doom – The Videogame That Broke The Mould

The very culture of the game seemed to run counter to all it’s predecessors. At first it almost seemed to become part of a gaming sub-culture. The geeky few who had it running on their PC would get hours of entertainment that much of the rest of the world were not yet aware of. I remember talking to a friend at highschool about Doom, and finding I had nothing to compare it against. I just remember saying that it was exactly like Mario wasn’t. How could we possibly have known at the time that this game would become the yardstick for future games of it’s kind that it would spawn, and that a new genre and gaming culture had been born?

True, it was technologically advanced for it’s time. But we need to look beyond this to see the real X Factor in Doom. Why this game changed the face of video game history, and spawened a tradition of games that would follow. Today – the shoot-em-up genre is mainstream and interesting other variations on this theme began to emerge. third person shooters such as Max Payne, more tactical games such as Rainbow Six or SWAT 4, or combine some of these variations as a third person tactical shooter quite unique to games such Full Spectrum Warrior. As online gaming became more acessible, the focus was

shifted from the player to the battlefield. The player could now be killed and the show would go on without them. This was a significant shift away from the truer games to the original genre such as Half Life where the story evolves entirely around the main character, and would end when the players life did. But all these games owe their heritage and existance to Doom and to Wolfenstein for creating the culture, and the opening in the market. Although this doesn’t detract from how good its successors were in their own right, and what extra twists they deliver to the genre, we need to put Doom in the context of being the game which boldly went where no game had gone before. And did it bloody well.

So many people ‘review’ games; rate them by their graphical brilliance, sound quality, game play or attention to detail, confident that these qualities all make up a good game. Every review you will have read uses some kind of scale or yard stick to try and measure certain qualities about a game.

Retro Game X Factor

BUT there is one yard stick that transcends all of these. The test of time. This retro gaming blog looks back on some of the classics for their buddha nature. Never mind how they looked, sounded or even played.

The X Factor for a game is it’s ability to entertain in ways which are not easily expressed, nor understood at the time. It is the factor which drives you to download an emulator for some of yesteryears games and still fondly spend an hour in the afternoon playing, despite knowing that the games are technologically inferior.

You don’t know why. But something about the game clearly survived long after the hardware of the machine it was written for is resigned to the digital graveyard

Universally Loved Retro Games

I’m sure the reader already has an idea of some games that bring back fond memories. But some of these games are more universally loved than others. Why? While everyone has unique tastes, there were clearly some retro games from the late 80’s and early 90’s that were fairly universally loved

Multi Platformed

There will be no boundaries for this blog, that all games are up for question. The golden age for gaming was clearly in the late 80’s early 90’s, but will not be limited exclusively to any particular period, machine, chip set or platform. This is not so much a retro review blog, but the eulogy of video games worthy of valhalla!

Objectives of this blog

While on the surface, appearing like another retro blog, I can promise something entirely different. I will try my best to articulate – in my view – the qualities that helped give the retro game it’s X Factor, get under the surface and explain what separated these particular games from their competitors. Not graphics, sound or any bullshit like that. Not even gameplay (per se). But that unique value that kept us playing all these years.

I invite you to join me in – what I feel certain – will be a fairly unique trip down memory lane
